In love with indigo? In this class, Katazome and Indigo dyeing, you will explore the centuries-old Japanese technique of using stencils and a rice paste resist to make patterns on fabric then dipped into an indigo vat. The instructor will prepare all textiles beforehand as well as the traditional rice paste resist, but students will make one recipe in class. We’ll talk about the history of this kind of pattern making and we’ll use traditional katagane (stencils) and modern stencils. We’ll make two different indigo vats to dip your creations and you’ll see beautiful blue and white patterns emerge. You’ll dye a bandanna and two organic cotton tea towels.  The instructor has worked with indigo vats and markmaking techniques for many years and recently returned from a month-long study trip to Japan.

** Important note about this class** This class has a strict minimum of 8 students. In the event that a total of 8 students do not sign up by April 25th (10 days prior) the class will be cancelled. If this happens we guarantee a full refund of your class tuition. Jan’s classes have been very popular so I do not expect this to happen, but it’s a possibility —help fill the class by inviting friends!
